AboutTrilaxa Suspension contains Lactulose, a synthetic disaccharide used as an osmotic laxative to treat chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy by improving bowel movements and reducing ammonia levels.Usage Instructions: Take orally as directed by your physician, usually once or twice daily. May be diluted with water, milk, or fruit juice to improve palatability. Take with meals for constipation; on empty stomach for hepatic encephalopathy.Benefits: Relieves chronic constipation, softens stools, increases bowel movement frequency, treats and prevents hepatic encephalopathy in liver cirrhosis, reduces blood ammonia levels, improves mental status in liver disease.How it Works: Lactulose is not hydrolyzed or absorbed in the small intestine. In the colon, it is metabolized by bacteria to lactic acid and acetic acid, which acidify colonic contents, trap ammonia (converting NH3 to NH4+), and promote excretion. Osmotic effect draws water into colon, softening stools.Side Effects: Common: bloating, flatulence, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. Serious: severe or persistent diarrhea leading to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia, hypernatremia), worsening of galactosemia, intestinal obstruction.Safety Advice: Contraindicated in galactosemia, intestinal obstruction, or undiagnosed abdominal pain. Use caution in diabetes (contains lactose, galactose). Maintain adequate fluid intake. Long-term use may cause electrolyte disturbances. Inform doctor of persistent diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration.Storage: Store below 25°C in a dry place. Protect from light and heat. Do not freeze. Keep bottle tightly closed. Discard if solution becomes very dark, cloudy, or develops unusual odor.
